Supporting the community is really important to us here at Xpand, and that’s why we’ve signed up as corporate partners of One in a Million, a charity that supports disadvantaged children in Bradford to help them achieve a better future.
Our Digital Designer, Si, is even running in the Leeds 10k to raise valuable funds and awareness!
One in a Million do vital work, engaging with disadvantaged children and young people through sports, arts and enterprise. Their mission is to encourage young people off the streets and into stimulating activities that develop their skills, understanding and confidence.
The goal is to provide pathways into employment, education, and training, working with some of the most vulnerable people in the city.
Following the Bradford riots in 2000, there was a widespread feeling of alienation amongst young people, with many people feeling isolated, marginalised, and unsupported.
Opportunities were limited and facilities lacking, with communities suffering the social blight associated with high rates of family breakdown, school exclusion and truancy, drug and substance misuse, crime and anti-social behaviour.
One In A Million was co-founded in 2005 by Wayne Jacobs (former Bradford City player and assistant manager) and Matthew Band (business leader and social entrepreneur) in direct response to these social problems.
The charity is now thriving, and even operates a Free School in BD8, which is a real pillar in the community. They also provide over 35 sports, arts, and enterprise themed activity programmes, and run a Positive Lifestyle Centre and Youth Offending Team.
As well as Si running in the Leeds 10k, we’ll be getting involved with lots of fundraising activities throughout the year on behalf of One in a Million – watch this space for news on that!
