As a marketing agency, we frequently come across ‘crimes’ to marketing that should never have been allowed to happen. In some way or another, these crimes are damaging the offending company’s brand in more ways than they may be aware.
So, because we’re such a nice bunch, we’ve highlighted 10 marketing dos and don’ts that we frequently come across, otherwise known as The 10 Xpandments! We’ve even put a quick animation together for you to watch if you’re feeling a bit lazy!
Xpandment no.1: Thou shalt honour thy client with regular updates
Always make sure you are regularly communicating with your client base. Email, phone, direct mail, face to face, carrier pigeon – whatever it is that gets you in front of your target audience (ok, maybe not carrier pigeon). Regular communication keeps your brand in front of your target audience and helps maximise your chance of making that all-important sale.
Xpandment no.2: Thou shalt have a mobile friendly website
Mobile and tablet device usage is higher than it has ever been, so a mobile responsive website is crucial to ensuring you are providing an easy user experience which will help lead to higher conversion rates for your website.
Xpandment no.3: Thou shalt measure thy marketing. If thou can measure it, thou can manage it.
‘If you can measure it, you can manage it’ – some very wise words from the world famous marketing author Philip Kotler.
If you measure your marketing, you’ll be able to gauge what is working and what isn’t. Once you have a tracked set of results you can do more of the marketing that works and take the time to investigate the marketing that doesn’t work.
Xpandment no.4: Thou shalt not swear on social media…
…or update social media while angry or drunk. Your social media account is an extension of your company and/ or personal brand. Bad language or negative comments will have the wrong kind of impact on your image!
Xpandment no.5: Thou shalt embrace change
Ever heard the saying ‘You snooze, you lose’? If you don’t ensure you continue to adapt to the changing environment around you, there’s a good chance your competitors will. A good marketing related example is web design and development. Online technology is changing so rapidly that it’s very important to review your online presence and least have a refresh every 2/3 years.
Xpandment no.6: Thou shalt have an SEO friendly website
If your prospective clients can’t find you online you’re missing some pretty big opportunities! Make sure you have suitable meta titles, H1 headers and keywords with well written content without excessive keyword cramming.
Xpandment no.7: Thou shalt keep thy branding uniform
Consistency is key. Keeping your logo, colours and fonts consistent across all your communications platforms (website, stationery, brochures, social media etc) will help maintain a tidy and above all professional image.
Xpandment no.8: Thou shalt not hire thy friend’s son’s friend’s brother-in-law’s cousin to build thy website
Ok, so the above is a bit of an exaggeration but when we hear the words ‘It’s ok, my friend’s brother can do web design’, the final product frequently does more damage than good! In other words – use a professional design agency if you want a job done right!
Xpandment no.9: Thou shalt set a marketing budget and regularly review it
A budget will help you manage your money much better. An important part of marketing is ROI – Return on Investment. If you know how much you have available to spend, you’ll have much more control over the results and where they come from.
Xpandment no.10: Though shalt not kill.
This generally applies to life in general as well as business. It’s definitely not good for your personal brand.
So there we have it folks. Our 10 Xpandments. Just a few friendly tips on how to keep on top of your marketing!
